THE FUTURE SELF: EQUIPPING THE BOYCHILD TO BECOME WHO HE IS DESTINED TO BE
Our SIAT Outreach at Amadi Ama Community Secondary School, Port Harcourt
What kind of man is the boy sitting in the classroom today becoming?
This is more than a question. It is a question about identity, purpose, responsibility, and the future of our society.
Recently, through the School Impact Acceleration Tour (SIAT) of The Equipped Boychild Project, we visited Amadi Ama Community Secondary School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to engage the boys in a conversation that goes beyond academic success. We spoke about discovering their identity, understanding their future selves, and learning to become that future through the choices they make today.
One of the things I strongly believe is that the future is not merely a destination we arrive at; it is a reality we begin to build through the way we live today.
A boy who desires to become a responsible man must begin to practise responsibility now. The boy who hopes to become a disciplined professional must begin to develop discipline in his daily habits. The boy who dreams of becoming a leader must learn to lead himself before seeking to lead others.
The future self is not created on the day we finally become adults. In many ways, that future begins with the decisions we make in the present.
IDENTITY: THE FOUNDATION OF THE FUTURE
One of the most important journeys a boy must undertake is the journey of discovering who he is.
When a boy does not understand his identity, he can easily allow peer pressure, social expectations, temporary pleasures, and the opinions of others to define him. He may spend years trying to become what the world expects him to be without discovering the person he has the capacity to become.
This is why we must intentionally create opportunities for boys to reflect on who they are, what they value, what they want their lives to represent, and the kind of men they aspire to become.
At The Equipped Boychild Project, we believe that equipping boys goes beyond telling them what is right or wrong. It involves helping them develop the mindset, self-awareness, values, and personal responsibility necessary to make meaningful decisions about their lives.
LIVE YOUR FUTURE IN THE PRESENT
During our engagement with the boys at Amadi Ama Community Secondary School, we encouraged them to think beyond who they are today and begin to consider who they are becoming.
Your future is influenced by what you repeatedly practise in the present.
If you want a future defined by excellence, begin to practise excellence in your studies and daily responsibilities.
If you want a future defined by integrity, choose honesty even when nobody is watching.
If you want to become a man who respects others, begin by learning to respect yourself, your teachers, your parents, your peers, and the boundaries of others.
If you desire to become a man of purpose, learn to make decisions that align with that purpose, even when those decisions are difficult.
Do not wait until you become the man you desire to be before you begin to live by the values of that man. Start today.
This is the kind of thinking we want to cultivate in our boys: the ability to connect their present behaviour with their future identity and to recognise that becoming is an intentional process.
WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
Our visit to Amadi Ama Community Secondary School represents another step in our commitment to supporting the personal development of the boychild.
We recognise that boys need more than academic instruction. They also need mentorship, positive role models, guidance, emotional awareness, character development, and opportunities to think critically about their lives and the choices before them.
When we invest in helping boys understand themselves, we give them a stronger foundation for navigating adolescence and preparing for adulthood.
We are grateful to the school management, teachers, students, and everyone who made this engagement possible.
THE VISION REQUIRES COLLECTIVE ACTION
However, one outreach is only a step in a much larger journey.
There are more schools to visit, more boys to reach, and more young lives that deserve access to intentional mentorship and personal development opportunities.
This is why I am inviting individuals, corporate organisations, educational institutions, philanthropists, NGOs, and development partners to collaborate with The Equipped Boychild Project through our school outreaches and other boychild development initiatives.
Your partnership can help us reach more schools, provide learning resources, strengthen mentorship opportunities, support programme logistics, and develop sustainable interventions that equip boys for life.
We are not simply asking society to pay attention to boys. We are inviting society to participate in their positive development.
As the Convener of The Equipped Boychild Project, I remain committed to this vision because I believe that when boys are intentionally equipped today, they are better positioned to become responsible men who contribute meaningfully to their families, communities, and society.
Let us help the boy understand who he is, envision who he can become, and develop the discipline to live that future one day at a time.
If you or your organisation would like to partner with or sponsor our upcoming SIAT school outreaches, mentorship sessions, and boychild development programmes, please send us a direct message.
Let us work together to make this vision bigger than any one person or organisation.
